Neck Bands: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

We all give plenty of attention to the skin on our faces, but despite our efforts, our necks may be sabotaging our quest for a young, dewey appearance. Neck Bands are a sneaky sign of aging! Also referred to as “tech neck,” platysma bands, or neck wrinkles, they come on quickly and can seem to be a formidable challenge. Luckily, as usual, we’ve got you! Let’s dive into the causes, prevention, and treatment of neck bands.

Causes

Unfortunately, skin on the neck is thinner than that on the face. This fact, combined with the fact that we often leave our necks out of our skincare routines, leaves us vulnerable to accelerated signs of aging on our necks.

In addition, our necks are not immune from regular collagen and fat deposit loss. This loss causes the muscles of the neck, known as platysmal muscles, to become more visible.

Significant weight loss, and genetics contribute to the appearance of neck bands in some people as well.

New research suggests that high intensity workouts are the true cause of neck bands. Repeated stretching of the skin on the neck due to engaging the platysmal muscles stretches it and causes sagging and the appearance of neck bands.

Prevention

Because there is not one clear cause of neck bands, prevention is not realistic. However, proper care can minimize and delay their appearance. The simplest and most important way to minimize neck bands is through skincare. We recommend that you extend your entire skincare routine to the neck and chest. At minimum, we recommend retinol, vitamin C, and moisturizer. Additionally, focus on relaxing the neck muscles during high intensity workouts.

Treatment

Botulinum Toxin: Botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for neck bands. By relaxing the platysma muscles, it causes the vertical bands to become less visible.
Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers treat neck bands by adding volume to the skin behind the bands. The plumping effect results in the diminished appearance of the neck bands. Dermal fillers work best when used along with Botulinum Toxin.

PDO Threads: If your neck bands haven’t been remedied by injectables, you don’t have to resort to painful, expensive surgery! PDO Threads may be just the procedure for you. We use PDO Threads to lift, tighten, and smooth the skin on the neck to diminish neck bands’ appearance.

Sculptra: Unlike dermal fillers, Sculptra fights signs of aging (such as neck bands) by helping the body to produce more collagen. When injected into the neck, it is an effective treatment for neck bands!
