History
Let’s begin by briefly discussing Rapamycin’s history.
When it was first isolated from a bacterium on Easter Island in 1972, Rapamycin was utilized with organ transplant patients as an immunosuppressant drug. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that researchers found that it significantly increased the lifespans of worms, yeast, flies, and mice. Now, it is disrupting the wellness and bio hacking scenes by being used in new applications to significantly slow the aging process.
How it Works
As discussed in the introduction above, rapamycin is the missing piece bio hackers have been searching for.
As we age, cellular senescence (cells that stop multiplying but don’t die off when they should), inflammation, and oxidative stress wear on our bodies. These three phenomena are the major contributors to the aging process and the signs of aging that we’d all like to avoid.
Rapamycin works by inhibiting the mTOR pathway, which is a key regulator of cell growth and proliferation. This leads to a reduction in (you guessed it) the three things that promote aging and the signs of aging–cellular senescence, inflammation, and oxidative stress.
