Microneedling 101

As fall approaches, skincare regimens often intensify. That’s because we’re usually trying to heal our skin after a summer spent in the harmful rays of the sun.  Luckily, fall is the perfect time for skincare procedures that require staying out of the sun.  At Lakeside Med Spa, we help refresh and rejuvenate your summer skin with Microneedling.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling skin rejuvenation is designed to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. It is a fast and effective treatment that helps improve:

  • Wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars
  • Acne scarring
  • Skin tone
  • Fine lines
  • Loose skin
  • Discoloration
  • Large Pores

Microneedling involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. Each small wound stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, both of which heal your skin and help you look younger.

What to Expect During A Microneedling Treatment

Most people get microneedling on the face, but it can also be done on other parts of the body, such as your stomach or thighs.

What Is Microneedling

The procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes, and we recommend a series of 3 treatments to see lasting results.  It’s as safe and less expensive than laser therapy.  Choosing a Med Spa for your microneedling treatment is best in order to ensure proper needle sterilization and avoid skin injury. At Lakeside we use single-use microneedling heads that can not be reused, eliminating the risk of cross contamination.

During your treatment, a numbing cream is applied to your skin to minimize pain from the needle pricks.  Then, the microneedling tool is moved across the skin, which may cause bleeding.  A healing serum is usually applied after the procedure to calm the skin.  The skin may appear red or enflamed for hours after the procedure.  This, as well as flaking or peeling, is normal ask the skin heals and will eventually wear off.

Microneedling With PRP

Microneedling 101

One variation of Microneedling includes pairing Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance your microneedling results. This procedure is commonly known as a “vampire facial”. Before the procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, and then placed in a centrifuge which spins the blood to naturally separate your own platelet rich plasma from your blood.

Then, during the microneedling procedure, PRP is applied to the skin into the superficial micro-channels created by the microneedles. This allows the PRP to be absorbed more effectively into the dermis. The skin repair process results in a thicker dermis with tighter skin and improved coloration.

PRP allows the skin to be infused with the client’s own natural growth factors. This promotes stimulation of new collagen production, hair regrowth, and quick healing time.
